2017 "Georgia Roadside Heritage" Photo Contest

2017 Georgia HPD Photo Contest

In celebration of National Historic Preservation Month, as well as Historic Preservation and Archaeology Months in Georgia, the Historic Preservation Division is hosting an online photo contest throughout May.

“Georgia Roadside Heritage” is the theme for the 8th annual Georgia Historic Preservation Division Photo Contest, which invites the public to submit photographs from around the state highlighting historic resources that reflect the proliferation of the automobile and car travel in Georgia during the early to mid-20th century; photos that show historic resources established to cater predominantly to automobile travelers – including roadside restaurants, motels, automobile showrooms, recreation and amusement facilities, stores, drive-in theaters, gas stations and even oversized signage, road-related markers or monuments that helped orient and attract motorists..

Participants in the contest must submit photos – no more than two per person – that depict places more than 50 years old. Those submitting photos are asked to do so via email to georgiashpo@gmail.com by May 30, 2017.

Photos must be:
  • 1200x800 pixels or larger.
  • Your original work.
Along with the photograph, participants must provide the following information:
  • Photographer and hometown
  • Photo location and description of the site depicted
Photo entries will be posted to the Georgia Historic Preservation Division Facebook page as they are received, and also shared on the HPD Twitter, Instagram, and Flickr accounts.

Contest photos will be judged by a panel of HPD staff based on creativity, choice of subject matter, and composition, with a top entry receiving the following prizes:
  • An annual membership to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation
  • A hard-copy book (TBD) about historic roadside resources/architecture.
Contest winners will be announced on the HPD website and social media pages.

By participating in the contest, you grant the Georgia Department of Natural Resources permission to use your photos on DNR websites, social media outlets, videos and publications.
